The Rule of Law and the American Dream

Law Day Chair Michael Flowers discusses the 2026 Law Day theme with a distinguished panel.

What is Law Day?

President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day in 1958 to mark the nationโ€™s commitment to the rule of law as a contrast to communist tyranny. In 1961, Congress issued a joint resolution making May 1st the official annual observance.

The 2026 Law Day theme is โ€œThe Rule of Law and the American Dream.โ€ The rule of law โ€”the idea that no person is above the law โ€” is what ensures the rights of the people to live their lives as freely as possible and to pursue their dreams. The American Bar Association (ABA) encourages all Americans to recognize Law Day on May 1, 2026, and to reflect on how the rule of law ensures all Americans can fulfill their dreams.

Ready to run for justice on May 16?

The Law Day Run in Salt Lake City is our annual 5K run that raises awareness and funds for civil legal aid. Law Day is an annual event sponsored by the American Bar Association (ABA) on May 1st. Our 5k is a chance to kick off the celebration of the law and our legal partners.

We believe that everyone should have access to legal representation, regardless of their financial status. This race raises funds that will be used to provide free and low-cost civil legal aid services to help vulnerable people protect their rights, access essential services, and live with dignity.
