What is Constitution Day?

The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the land, providing the foundation for the nation’s existence and the authority of its federal government. It establishes the framework for the three branches of government: the legislative branch with a bicameral Congress, the executive branch led by the President, and the judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court. The Constitution not only defines the powers and responsibilities of each branch, but also preserves important rights for the individual states, creating the federal system of government. To honor this historic document, Constitution Day was established by Congress in 2004 and is observed each year on September 17, commemorating the signing of the Constitution in 1787.
