The American Bar Association convened for its 71st Midyear Meeting in Orlando, Florida on February 8-9, 2010. Your Utah Bar Delegates, Larry Stevens and Margaret Plane, and I attended the meeting. The Daily Journal of the actions of the House of Delegates can be found on the House of Delegate’s website. The Select Committee Report is a more comprehensive summary of all of the activities of the House.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the presentation by Justice Christine M. Durham, reporting on the state of the judiciary in her role as Chief of the Chief Judges. The Utah delegation received many comments regarding how fortunate Utah is to have such an impressive Chief Justice.
Following a comprehensive dues pricing study, which included a survey of 9,000 lawyers of both members and non-members and upon recommendation from the Standing Committee on Membership, the House revised part of the ABA’s dues pricing structure, in an effort to attract more solo practitioners, government lawyers, judges and legal services attorneys. The House also agreed to consider other pricing incentives for other dues categories in an effort to not just retain, but attract a larger percentage of our profession.
The ABA continues to work to offer additional benefits of use to its members both on the job and off. It has partnered with several major companies that offer ABA member advantages including HP, Office Depot, Mozy, Paychex, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Sprint, Toshiba, Chase Bank, Xerox and UPS which is offering a discount on secure computer backup to ABA members. To see information on the many discounts that are available, please visit Member Advantage.
Also, a service of the ABA Governmental Affairs Offices is providing up-to-date information on federal legislative issues to national, state and local bar leaders. The publication is produced exclusively in electronic form and the latest version can be viewed here.
