| The Utah Law-Related
Education Project, a nonprofit association, began as a pilot program in
the Salt Lake City School District in 1974. In 1989 the Project moved
to its present location at the Utah State Bar Law and Justice Center.
The Project has expanded each year and has trained thousands of educators,
attorneys, court employees, juvenile justice professionals, and other
legal professionals through a host of institutes, seminars, courses and
programs such as the Mock Trial Competition, Court Tours, Conflict Management
Programs, Peer Court, Mentor, Teaching Law in the HighSchools, Youth Summits,
and Juvenile Justice Programs. During this time, the Project has served
all of Utah's forty school districts in grades kindergarten through twelve.
LRE empowers youth and community members to become effective law-abiding
citizens by promoting civic responsibility and community participation.
Through high-interest lessons and activities, they learn about the law,
the legal system, and their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
The result of participation in law related education activities has
been an increase in self-esteem, a reduction in delinquent behavior,
and an awareness of how to work successfully within the legal system.
The Project is staffed by a part-time director who oversees all law-related
education programs, a part-time Administrative Assistant and two program
coordinators who oversee the Mock Trial Program, Salt Lake Peer Court,
We the People Program, Mentor/Dialogue on Freedom Program, Teaching
Law in the High Schools seminar, Conflict Resolution Program, In-Service
Training, and the Lending Library. Volunteers are key to the success
of the Project. Each year attorneys donate approximately 2,300 hours,
which qualify as pro bono hours, to the various programs with community
members and teachers donating approximately 5,000 hours as the Project
serves Utah's forty school districts and surrounding communities.
