MINUTES PARK CITY BAR ASSOCIATION BOARD MEETING
OCTOBER 18, 2001

PRESENT: Frank Normile,  Dwayne Vance, Lade Heaton, Barbara Sharp, Kathy Kinsman  Guest: Cindy Kiswell, prospective new member. ABSENT:  Christina Miller,  Sam Adams, Mark Kozak.

Frank moved to approve the minutes of the September meeting, which was unanimously approved.  We had planned a photo shoot, complete with fuzzy sweaters to promote that “wolf in sheep’s clothing” image, but due to the lack of attendees, it was postponed and the photographer obligingly promised to come back again. This picture is to go on the web site and on the Film Series’ picture carrousel of pre-show advertisements and sponsors.

Coalville court situation. Record did story quoting Dave Thomas about the alleged “contract” delineating what cases would be held in Coalville.  Dwayne was quoted as saying he has yet to see a contract. Dwayne will prepare an order under GRAMA for the county attorney’s records pertaining to the alleged contract.

Summit County Court Complex Dedication October 12 went well. Speakers were entertaining. Painting was received well. PCB got boatloads of positive publicity and PR.  We also presented copy of annotated code for the library. The painting’s ownership is actually held by the Arts Council, who acts as administrator for it and other art work in public places.  The court is leasing it for 25 years, at $1 a year (to prevent the AC from selling it/moving it or otherwise disturbing its place in the court. Carol is waging ongoing campaign for additional artwork and wants “input” from PCB. While the PCB is certainly interested in future purchases, we would prefer not to take an official stand at this time, advocating a particular piece/theme.  We gave Carol a lot of input on potential subjects at our September meeting. However, anyone on the board is welcome to contact her at  carolt@fiber.net for their personal input.

Tuesday Night Bar: Sam not present for report.  However, Barbara noted that the turnout was fair but spotty over the 2 hour period. Problem of Jan/Feb—unable to do Miners Hospital or anywhere else in town in January. There is a possibility to hold it at the Catholic Church or new library at Kimball Junction.  Based on probable heavy work schedules and difficulty of travel by the population generally attended, it was determined to cancel the February TNB outright.

CLE: Notices have been sent out for the October 31 brown bag: Mediation and Arbitration by Scott Daniels.  Also a good opportunity to meet Scott for those residents gerrymandered into his SLC east bench district by the legislature (west of highway 40 and south of I 80).    Library conference room

According to Kathy, here are the next few scheduled  brown bags:

November 8:  DUI and drug possession with Tara Isaacson. Belmarc Building

December 13 Lien Law with Tony Patterson from AG’s office.

Kathy will send out notices to members due to the revolt instigated by Dwayne’s office support staff.  Will try to pry out a list of members’ email addresses from the USB—the list provided did not include email addresses, although many member indicate that their email address is public (ie, on the USB web site).

January—want to do a presentation on what will happen to court system during Olympics.  Dave Thomas (county attorney not the Wendy’s CEO) is liason with SLOC.  Invite Judge Hilder.

Treasurer: Mark not present for report. Dwayne received a check for $750 from USB for dues checkoff, which will pay the $742.89 bill for the Utah Code. We paid $500.00 for refreshments at the Court Dedication.  Unfortunately, the new checks from Frontier Bank have the street address of Tesch Vance & Miller rather than our the PCB PO box., also no place for acounter signatures on checks. Frank moved to order new checks with appropriate address and signature line, approved unanimously.

And Justice for All: Dwayne received a mailing on applications for grants for free legal programs, $4000-7000.   While it is not appropriate for the PCB to apply for a grant for the TNB program, especially as we have donated to And Justice for All, the paperwork is available if anyone knows of any other free legal programs that could benefit.

Court situation---need survey on rotation of judges, case administration, evaluation of clerks, will be distributed next month.  Also question on opt out on bar web site.

November 15, 2001 is our next meeting. Dwayne got a phone call, so the meeting was abruptly adjourned at 8:50 am.   Kathy moved to adjourn, seconded by Frank, approved unanimously.

Respectfully submitted,
Barbara W. Sharp
