Bar
Sharks Pool Tournament 2006
This year's event was a great success and raised $5,467 for "and
Justice for all" civil legal aid programs in Utah. The proceeds
raised from the tournament directly benefited programs providing
civil legal assistance to disadvantaged individuals and families
in Utah.

| On November 14, 2007, approximately
fifty women attorneys and law students attended a seminar
hosted by YLD at Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough entitled "Been
There, Done That." During the seminar, a
panel of distinguished women judges and attorneys, including the
Honorable Michele M. Christiansen, Annette W. Jarvis, Susan
B. Peterson, and Stephanie W. Pugsley, discussed the challenges
and rewards of being a young female attorney. The panel
discussed and answered questions regarding various issues that women
attorneys face, from maternity leave and childcare issues
to dealing with stress and interacting successfully with male
colleagues and clients. The discussion was both lively
and informative, and the seminar was a great success. YLD
would like to thank both our panel members for sharing their
experiences and all those who attended and participated
in this event. |

Young
Lawyers Division Sponsors Debate Tournament 2007
On
October 26th and 27th, students from throughout the Salt Lake Valley
assembled at West High School for two days of competition in the
Third Annual Young Lawyers Debate Tournament. The event, co-sponsored
by the Young Lawyers Division and the Litigation Section of the
Utah State Bar, included competition in Policy Debate, Lincoln
Douglas Debate and Public Forum Debate. In keeping with tournament
tradition, the final round of Policy Debate was judged
by three members of the Utah State Bar who are themselves former
high school and college debaters, including
David Reymann of (Parr
Waddoups Brown Gee & Loveless),
Robert Wing (Holland & Hart)
and Brad
Sidle (Brian S. King & Associates).
This well-qualified panel heard a debate between Bingham High
School and Rowland Hall concerning the United States’s
aid policy toward Sub-Saharan Africa. In a close debate, the
judges declared Bingham High School the winner.
The theme of having lawyers judge debate events was also expanded
this year into Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum Debate. In
the final round of Lincoln Douglas Debate, a panel of Stephanie
Pugsley (Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough), Mark
Astling (Stoel Rives) and Chad
Derum (Manning Curtis Bradshaw & Bednar)
listened to a competitive debate concerning the value of offering
plea bargains in exchange for testimony in criminal cases.
Adam Abro of Juan Diego High School defeated Shey Devenport
of Cottonwood High School in that debate.
The Tournament’s most distinguished judging panel listened
to arguments about the partitioning of Iraq in the final round
of the Public Forum Debate competition. Teams from Bingham
High School and Lone Peak had their arguments evaluated by
Judge Michael M. McConnell of
the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit and
University of Texas law professor (and former S.J. Quinney
College of Law professor), Karen
Engle.
That panel, which also included Chad Derum, declared Bingham
High School the winner.
Many hours of hard work were invested in organizing and directing
the tournament. The Young Lawyers Division and the Litigation
Section are particularly indebted to the efforts of Highland
High School Debate Coach Dave Smith, for his outstanding leadership
in directing the tournament and acting as a liaison with the
Bar. The Bar should look forward to continuing to take an active
role in promoting connections between high school debate and
the practice of law. Involvement in debate is often a first
step toward exploring a career in the law and the Young Lawyers
Debate Tournament provides a positive point of contact between
high school students and lawyers.

Highland Team: Tyler Bettilyon and Dayton Thorpe
The Young Lawyers Division and the Litigation Section sponsored
a high school debate tournament that was held at Highland High
School October 20 and October 21, 2006. High schools from throughout
the area participated in the weekend of competition. For the
final round of policy debate, we had 5 lawyers judging the
contest between Rowland Hall and Highland High. These teams
are both strong forces on the national high school debate circuit
and it was a great event. In the end, Highland defeated Rowland
Hall by a 3-2 decision.

The 2008 Liberty Bell Award Recipient: Darren Workman and family. The Liberty Bell Award is given to a community member or organization for their significant contributions to the community. This year, the Liberty Bell Award was given to Darren Workman. In Darren's own words, "Wherever my life leads, I know that I will always be serving youth in one capacity or another." Darren currently works as a probation officer and runs a juvenile court mentor program called The Village Project. The Young Lawyers Division is proud to recognize Darren's commitment to the community and the youth of Utah.

The 2008 Young Lawyer of the Year: Margaret Plane and her mentors.
Margaret Plane is currently the co-chair of the Utah State Bar committee looking at shifting NLCLE away from a one-size-fits-all program to a mentoring based program that will help train and teach new lawyers in areas like civility, professionalism, and lawyering generally. Margaret is also on the Women Layers of Utah's board and currently serves as the co-char of the Career Advancement of Development Committee. That committee is in charge of events like the annual Fireside with Chief Justice Margaret Durham; overseeing the selection of the Christine M. Durham Woman Layer of the Year; the Banter with the Bench; and nominating women (and those who support women in the profession) for awards and judicial nominating commissions.

YLD / UMBA Mentoring Marathon - January 26, 2008
Nearly 60 law students and 35 attorneys met
for the Second Annual Mentoring Marathon at the Law & Justice
Center on Saturday, January 26, 2008. The students
participated in break-out sessions where they had one-on-one
advice from attorneys about their individual resumes, how
to be an associate, interviewing tips, and the value of doing
a judical clerkship. Associate Chief Justice of the
Utah Supreme Court Michael Wilkins then spoke to the entire
group in a question and answer format, allowing the students
and attorneys gain a greater appreciation for their chosen
profession. |
