    Elections of YLD Officers for the 2009-2010 Bar Year

    The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) will be holding elections for the office of President-Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary for the 2009-2010 bar year in the coming months. These Officers are responsible for the general supervision and control of the affairs of the YLD. The specific responsibilities of the officers are as follows:

    President-Elect: The president-elect shall act as president in the absence of the president, shall be Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee, shall plan programs in cooperation with the Executive Council, and shall perform such other duties as may be assigned by the president. The president-elect shall automatically succeed to the office of the president for a one-year term. The president shall preside at all meetings of the YLD and meetings of the Executive Council and shall perform such other duties and acts usually pertaining to this office. The president shall prepare a report of the activities of the YLD for the past year for presentation in the issue of the YLD’s newsletter immediately preceding the Utah State Bar’s annual meeting. The president shall prepare and submit an annual budget to the Board of Commissioners and other reports as may be necessary.

    Secretary: The secretary shall keep minutes of meetings, send out notices, prepare agendas, shall act as administrative assistant to the president, shall assist committee chairpersons in carrying out the work of the committees and shall perform such other duties as may be assigned by the president or Executive Council. Upon being succeeded in office, the secretary shall turn over all YLD records and correspondence to the successor secretary.

    Treasurer: The treasurer shall chair the Finance Committee, prepare an annual budget for submission to the officers of the YLD, submit to the Executive Council quarterly reports within one month after the end of each quarter, and handle all financial matters of the YLD under the direction of the president of the YLD. Upon being succeeded in office, the treasurer shall turn over all YLD financial records to the successor treasurer.

    Any YLD member may run for office provided they are in good standing and will remain a member of YLD during the term or terms in office for which they are running.

    Nominations for the office must state the office being sought and include the signatures of three members of YLD who are in good standing. Each nomination must also be accompanied by a written statement containing the candidate’s biography, qualifications and platform. The written statement must be no longer than the equivalent of two pages, typewritten and double-spaced on one side of a sheet of paper. Nominations should be submitted to Sara Becker, c/o Kirton & McConkie, 60 East South Temple, Suite 1800, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111 (sbecker@kmclaw.com).

    Nominations must be submitted by 5 pm on May 31, 2009. Elections will be held the week of June 15, 2009.     WLU Initiative on the Advancement & Retention of Women Attorneys

    The Women Lawyers of Utah (WLU) recently conducted a survey regarding the advancement and retention of women attorneys. The WLU are hosting two events to share the results of this survey.

    On May 21, 2009, Chief Justice Durham and WLU are hosting a symposium on "Identifying the Problem and How It Hurts Your Bottom Line." The topics include unveiling the retention survey results and discussing the best business practices and the financial implications of the retention of women. Special guests include Cynthia Calvert, co-director PAR at U of C Hastings College of Law and Blane R. Prescott, the Hildebrant Institute (nationally recognized experts on retention issues in the workplace). The symposium will be held at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State Street, SLC, UT, from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. Cost is $75.00, with 4 Credits of CLE pending. RSVP to Marily Belka at mbelka@fabianlaw.com.     2009 Young Lawyers Phone-A-Thon

    2009 YOUNG LAWYERS PHONE-A-THON

    We are asking for volunteers to join the Young Lawyers Division for the ninth annual “and Justice for all” Phone-a-thon to be held on Thursday, April 10th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Jones Waldo law offices, located on the 15th Floor inside the U.S. Bank building – 170 S. Main Street.

    Join us for whatever length of time you can and make only the calls you choose. We'll have pledge cards sorted for your ease in locating potential donors you know and feel comfortable calling. All the names on the list are people who have given to "and Justice for all" in the past -no cold calls!

    Please come and help us out by recruiting as many additional callers as you can - attorneys, law clerks, paralegals, and other staff.

    We will have cell phones (temporarily donated by Cricket) for your use. We have also prepared talking points and answers to common questions. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

    The Utah State Bar Young Lawyers Division invites all attorneys living and working in Salt Lake County to volunteer their time for the Wills for Heroes pro bono event scheduled for January 17, 2009. Wills for Heroes provides, through volunteer attorneys, wills and other estate planning documents for emergency first responders and their spouses or partners. There are over 100 Salt Lake County first responders and their significant others that will qualify to have Wills for Heroes prepare their free estate planning documents on January 17, 2009.

    The YLD will teach you all you need to know to participate in this great volunteer
    opportunity – you just need to attend the mandatory training session held 30 minutes prior to the event, and sign up to confirm your intent to volunteer. We need volunteer attorneys for shifts between 3 and 6 hours long.

    REQUIRED TRAINING
    All interested attorney volunteers must attend the mandatory pre-event training session, unless you have previously been trained. The training session will be offered from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at 7602 South Jordan Landing Blvd, West Jordan. Attorney volunteers will be trained on the HotDocs® program, receive a primer on basic estate planning, and will qualify for one hour of CLE/NLCLE credit. If you intend to have an assistant complete data entry during the event, then please have your assistant attend the HotDocs® training.
