Elections of YLD Officers for the 2009-2010 Bar Year
The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) will be holding elections for the office of President-Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary for the 2009-2010 bar year in the coming months. These Officers are responsible for the general supervision and control of the affairs of the YLD. The specific responsibilities of the officers are as follows:
President-Elect: The president-elect shall act as president in the absence of the president, shall be Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee, shall plan programs in cooperation with the Executive Council, and shall perform such other duties as may be assigned by the president. The president-elect shall automatically succeed to the office of the president for a one-year term. The president shall preside at all meetings of the YLD and meetings of the Executive Council and shall perform such other duties and acts usually pertaining to this office. The president shall prepare a report of the activities of the YLD for the past year for presentation in the issue of the YLD’s newsletter immediately preceding the Utah State Bar’s annual meeting. The president shall prepare and submit an annual budget to the Board of Commissioners and other reports as may be necessary.
Secretary: The secretary shall keep minutes of meetings, send out notices, prepare agendas, shall act as administrative assistant to the president, shall assist committee chairpersons in carrying out the work of the committees and shall perform such other duties as may be assigned by the president or Executive Council. Upon being succeeded in office, the secretary shall turn over all YLD records and correspondence to the successor secretary.
Treasurer: The treasurer shall chair the Finance Committee, prepare an annual budget for submission to the officers of the YLD, submit to the Executive Council quarterly reports within one month after the end of each quarter, and handle all financial matters of the YLD under the direction of the president of the YLD. Upon being succeeded in office, the treasurer shall turn over all YLD financial records to the successor treasurer.
Any YLD member may run for office provided they are in good standing and will remain a member of YLD during the term or terms in office for which they are running.
Nominations for the office must state the office being sought and include the signatures of three members of YLD who are in good standing. Each nomination must also be accompanied by a written statement containing the candidate’s biography, qualifications and platform. The written statement must be no longer than the equivalent of two pages, typewritten and double-spaced on one side of a sheet of paper. Nominations must be submitted by 5 pm on May 31, 2009. Elections will be held the week of June 15, 2009.
