Minutes for August 30, 2005

MINUTES
OFFICERS MEETING
UTAH STATE BAR TAX SECTION
August 30, 2005

1. Financial Statements.
We still did not have the financial statements showing the amount of dues paid in during the summer of 2005.

Graden Jackson had made arrangements with the Alta Club and they agreed to improve the food selection if we increased the luncheon fee to $20

2. List of Officers and members
Mr. Howard had arranged with the bar association for the updates in the officer list for the section.

3. Monthly luncheons
Sept. 27, 2005, Dennis Astill on “off-shore Estate Planning and Related Tax Issues;
October 25, 2005, Joel Marker on “Tax Changes in the Bankruptcy Code;”
Nov. , 2005, Rebecca Rockkwell agreed to call Mike Mower at the Governor’s office to see if she could arrange a speaker on current state tax issues.
April 11, 2006, Legislative update done jointly with the Estate Tax Section.
Others to be arranged.

4. We continued the discussion on by-laws to the future.

5. We firmed up assignments of section officers as follows:

a. Supreme Court Ethics Advisory Committee, Mark H. Howard

b. Mid-year Bar meeting, A. Craig Hale

c. Annual Bar meeting, Mark H. Howard

d. Government Relations Committee, A. Craig Hale

e. IRS Tax liaison group, change to Graden Jackson

7. Possible scholarship for U of U and/or BYU law school tax students. Gary Thorup provided the following information. The U of U has a merit scholarship program. They encourage a donation of $2,500 in order to get matching funds. They have scholarships starting at $500. They also have awards given to a student showing promise in a given area. The U of U would like to know by March or April so that it can make an award for the following year. It would not have a problem with alternating the award between the U of U and BYU.

8. Utah Tax Review Commission asked for assistance in reviewing Utah tax laws. We solicited section members to form a committee. We designated the following persons to a committee to assist with this request:

Gary Thorup, committee chair,
Clark Snelson;
Matthew D. Wride;
Steve Young.

9. The officers approved the purchase of a $300 gift certificate to be presented to Gary Thorup in appreciation for his service as an officer of the Tax Section for the last four years.

10. Mr. Howard provided a report on an August 15, 2005, meeting of the Utah Bar Association for section leaders.

11. The officers made a decision not to contribute to the Utah Minority Bar Association program scheduled for Oct. 15, 2005.

12. The officers approved the payment of $50 to maintain membership in the National Association of Stat Bar Tax Sections and approved having Mr. Howard attend the annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

13. The next section officers’ meeting was scheduled for December 6, 2005, at noon.
