Minutes of May 8, 2002 Meeting

The Executive Committee of the Litigation Section met on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at 8:00 a.m., at the Law and Justice Center in Salt Lake City.

1. Attendance. Executive Committee members present were Bruce Badger, Lee Curtis, Wayne Klein, and Frank Carney.

2. Approval of Minutes. The minutes from the last meeting were reviewed and approved.

3. New Member. We noted that Bryan Pattison has agreed to serve on the Executive Committee and serve to better give us insights on Southern Utah concerns. (Bryan practices in St. George.) Unfortunately, because of a lack of teleconferencing equipment, we were unable to have Bryan join in our meeting, although he was available.

Denise Dragoo. Denise Dragoo is a candidate for President-Elect of the Utah State Bar and spoke to us about her background and her goals if she were to be elected.

New Members. Willis Orton could not be present so we passed until the next meeting the issue of a Northern Utah member. We also discussed the need to discuss non-participatory members at the next meeting and also to suggest new names, including a Northern Utah member.

Annual Meeting of Utah State Bar. Frank Carney reviewed the status of Annual Meeting preparations. We are set for four breakout sessions from David Ball on using drama techniques in the courtroom, jury selection, and arguing damages. We also have arranged for David Leta to speak on collecting a judgment. Our total financial commitment to the Annual Meeting will be approximately $6,500, all for Mr. Ball's speaking fee ($5,000) and expenses.

Annual Meeting of Litigation Section. We discussed having an "Annual Meeting" of the Section in the context of a luncheon meeting in September. This would be combined with an hour-long CLE.

MUJI. Passed until next meeting.

Trial Academy. Passed until next meeting.

St. George Golf 'n CLE: November 8th. This is tentatively set for November 8th. Willis Orton and Deno Himonas will plan it. Bryan Pattison should also be involved.

CLE on Appellate Practice: December 19th. The Section will sponsor or co-sponsor with the Appellate Practice Section on appellate practice on December 19th. Mike Petrogeorge will be responsible. We suggested Judges Greenwood, Durham, Stephen Anderson or Mike Murphy, Kate Toomey, and Debra Moore. Topics suggested were: rules, briefing, and oral argument.

Next meeting. Our next meeting was set for 8:00 am on Wednesday, June 12th.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 a.m.
