Minutes - September 10, 2008

Present: Helen Christian, Al Pranno, Lauren Barros, John Sheaffer, Russ Minas, Angela Fonnesbeck, Stewart Ralphs, Charlotte Meacham, Kellie Williams, Rick Hummel, Doug Adair. Subcommittee Reports

Legislation and Rules. Stewart reports he sent another version of Rule 108. Kellie suggests replacing "after filing" with "after service" to 20 day deadline to provide documents. The change seems supported by AI, Helen, and Russ. Kellie suggests an additional 10 days if served out of state. Stewart does not agree. Al agrees with Kellie. Stewart will change language to make filing ofdocs consistent with answer. Stewart will revise and send final revisions. Stewart: Rep Falk works with Legislative Council on a bill called Harboring a Runaway. He will send out for input. Not much else going on in interim.

Monthly Seminars. Doug reports 10/24,1/23,2/27,and 4/24 reserved. First slot is for Dr. David Dodgion, who does psychosexual evaluations. Need to decide which seminar to hold in Logan. Russ suggests Val Hale to present on mediation-based custody evaluations. Brainstorming other speakers. Doug reported on the joint conference with the bankruptcy section seminar. Great attendance. John Sheaffer moderated. Great panel. The Bankruptcy section never asked us to pay. Doug will follow up. Christmas Social. Helen reports that the subcommittee is working on a date and venue. Fall Forum. Russ reports that the Fall Forum will be on Friday, November 21. Adam Caldwell volunteered to present on his FLDS experience in Texas. Scholarship Report. John reports Louise drafted a letter to U ofU and BYU. Emails about whether it should come from bar letterhead and be signed by State Bar President, Nate Alder and John Sheaffer as President. We agreed it looks good to include the bar. Spring Convention. Rick is asking for ideas. Helen suggests handing out survey sheet asking for more ideas. Kellie suggests Polygamist issues and Juvenile Court intervention. Subcommittee Assignments. John reports he assigned new people to committees. Contact him if you want to switch.
Other Business.

And Justice for All requests a grant again. John reports we gave them $5000 last year. As of end of July, our section had $12,000 after deducting scholarships, not including bar dues. We will defer until we have the financial information.

John requests we let him know if we have other issues to add to future agendas. Kellie suggests more scholarship type investments ofour money, instead ofletting it sit. John says we gave money last year to the Family Court and reminds us of other things we have developed an interest in.
Adjournment.There being no other business the meeting was adjourned until October 8, 2008.
