Bar Appellate Practice Section ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES August 29, 2006 After welcoming attendees, Chair Ken Bronston gave a recap of the excellent presentations the section has given during his 2005-06 term, including: • September 2005 presentation by David Frederick Ken also announced that Patricia Millett of the United States Solicitor General’s office will be speaking about appellate brief writing on October 11, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. Ms. Millett is a distinguished speaker, and we are looking forward to an excellent turnout and presentation. Ken also gave updates on the successful appellate oral argument-streaming program; the appellate section’s excellent financial status; the section’s plan to continue billing no-shows at CLE events to preserve the section’s funds; the section’s work in persuading the Bar to generate more detailed financial statements; and an upcoming article in the September/October 2006 Utah Bar Journal by Brett DelPorto and Jeff Gray, about practice before the United States Supreme Court in general and about their Brigham City case in particular. Ken then turned the meeting over to the new chair, Tawni Sherman. Tawni thanked past committee members for their service, and emphasized the considerable amount of work that Ken has done to energize the section and secure several nationally-recognized speakers. Judge Gregory Orme kindly volunteered to continue as the section’s judicial liaison. Tawni inartfully conducted elections for the offices of secretary/treasurer and two general committee positions, replacing Robert’s Rules of Order with an “is everybody cool with that?” procedure. By acclamation, Troy Booher was elected secretary/treasurer, and Ken Bronston and John Bogart were elected as committee members. Jeanne Inouye succeeds to the position of chair-elect.
