Appellate Practice Section
Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
April 4, 2006
Present: Judge Gregory Orme (Court of Appeals), Ken
Bronston (Chair), Tawni J. Sherman (Chair-elect), Lori J. Seppi (Committee
Member)
Excused: Jeanne B. Inouye (Secretary/Treasurer), Kate A. Toomey (Committee
Member)
Action and Information Items:
1. Upcoming Events: The committee is still looking for
a keynote speaker for a presentation this Fall. Thomas Brunker has been
approached about presenting a CLE about post-conviction proceedings, and
has indicated that he would be happy to do that. January 2007 was proposed
as a possible time for Brunker’s presentation. The next scheduled
events are the “Behind the Scenes at the Appellate Courts”
presentation, scheduled for April 12, and Professor Scharff’s presentation
on logic in brief writing and oral argument, scheduled for June 7.
2. Section Dues: The committee discussed whether to
raise section dues, which are currently $10/year. The committee decided
unanimously that there is no need to raise dues at this time.
3. Audio Streaming: Audio streaming is now available
for court of appeals arguments in addition to supreme court arguments.
The committee scheduled a meeting with appellate court administrators
and IT representatives from the courts for June 13, 2006, at 2:00 p.m.
At that meeting, we will discuss the progress of the audio streaming project
and whether there are minor changes that would make major differences
in the ease of using the audio streaming technology.
4. Appellate Section Banner: Lori Seppi reported on
various price ranges for banners that can be displayed at section-sponsored
events. Tawni Sherman will contact Tobin Hagen to see whether he would
be willing to design a logo for the section.
5. Annual Meeting: Traditionally, the section has held
its annual meeting in July. Because of the State Bar Convention, the appellate
courts’ schedules, and the fact that many people take extended vacations
in July, the committee decided to postpone this year’s annual meeting
until August. August 29, 2006 was proposed as a tentative date for the
meeting, to be held at noon, with lunch provided.
If necessary, the committee will propose an amendment to the section’s
bylaws to allow for greater flexibility in scheduling the annual meeting.
6. Next meeting: June 13, 2006, 2:00 p.m., at the Matheson
Courthouse (court of appeals conference room).
