  • Certificates of Good Standing are only issued to members of the Utah State Bar or an authorized representative/entity.
  • Certificates of Good Standing CANNOT be issued to a member who is suspended for administrative reasons or is disbarred or has resigned with discipline pending.

Regular Certificate of Good Standing
The Regular Certificate of Good Standing contains the following:
  • Full name of the licensed lawyer (as currently listed in the USB member database)
  • Date of admission
  • Current status (Active or Inactive)
  • Statement that no public discipline has been taken against the lawyer if the statement is applicable.
Regular certificates will be issued within five (5) to seven (7) business days of receipt of a complete and accurate request form.

Specialized Certificate of Good Standing
Some government entities, employers or other state bars require “Specialized” Certificates of Good Standing with information in addition to that contained in a regular certificate. Such as more specific admission information, discipline history and license status history. Please check with the requesting entity and include any explanatory letters or forms with your request so that we can provide the necessary additional information.

The Specialized Certificate of Good Standing contains the following:
  • Full name of the licensed lawyer (as currently listed in the USB member database)
  • Type of admission (includes date of exam if applicable)
  • Date of admission
  • Status history from date of admission to present
  • Current status (Active or Inactive)
  • Statement that no public discipline has been taken against the lawyer if the statement is applicable.
  • Discipline History (this is provided separately via the Bar’s Office of Professional Conduct if a fully executed Authorization Waiver and Release Form is provided with the request.)
NOTE: You must provide an ORIGINAL (no faxes or emails), Fully executed Authorization, Waiver and Release Form if you need ANY type of discipline history beyond the statement made in the Regular Certificate of Good Standing. Please check with the entity you are dealing with for specific criteria needed. (Different jurisdictions have different requirements regarding the definition of an acceptable COGS.)***If you are needing to obtain a Discipline History ONLY (not including a certificate) please contact the Office of Professional Conduct at opcstaff@utahbar.org

Expedited Certificate of Good Standing
Both a regular and specialized certificate can be requested to be expedited. Certificates requested through expedited service will be issued within three (3) business days of receipt of a complete and accurate request form.
