| Overview
The State of Utah Division of Aging & Adult Services coordinates
with Utah Legal Services, the Needs of the Elderly Committee of the
Utah State Bar, individual bar members, and the twelve area agencies
on aging (AAAs) throughout the state to provide the elderly with legal
assistance, information, and referrals. We need periodically attorneys
to handle cases, to take phone calls from older individuals concerning
legal questions, to serve on the statewide guardianship/conservatorship
pro bono panel, and to do presentations and/or consultations at senior

Mission Statement
The Legal Services Developer with the State of Utah Division of Aging
and Adult Services coordinates with the area agencies on aging (AAAs),
Utah Legal Services, and the private bar, including groups furnishing
services to older individuals on a pro bono and reduced fee basis, to
provide legal assistance to older individuals throughout the State of
Utah, focusing on older individuals with the greatest economic and social
need, including older individuals with severe disabilities, limited
English-speaking ability, and who live in rural areas.
What We Do
We provide legal assistance for older individuals and we seek to protect
the rights of the elderly and educate them on legal issues that pertain
to the aging population. The twelve AAAs in Utah contract with Utah
Legal Services and private bar members to provide direct client services.
At times, there are cases that Utah Legal Services and/or federal money
from the Older Americans Act does not cover. We need attorneys to take
these cases on a pro bono or reduced fee basis. We also support pro
bono projects, including the statewide guardianship/conservatorship
panel of attorneys who are familiar with this area of law to protect
the rights of the elderly and other vulnerable adults and to aid the
court by accepting appointments to do primarily defense of guardianship
cases, or at times to represent an indigent petitioner seeking guardianship
of an incapacitated individual. In addition, the AAAs sponsor presentations
on legal issues affecting the elderly and consultations on an individual
basis to answer questions and make referrals. We need volunteer attorneys
to do these presentations and/or consultations. Contact Mary Jane Ciccarello,
State Legal Services Developer, at 801/538-4641, or mciccarello@utah.gov.
