The Salt Lake City Attorney’s Office serves as legal counsel to the City Administration and Council. The office has an opening in the civil division for a Senior City Attorney. Compensation will vary depending upon qualifications and experience.
The position involves work assignments which include: drafting and reviewing ordinances and resolutions, preparing legal opinions, drafting and reviewing contracts and advising elected officials, department directors, City boards and commissions and employees on legal matters. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in municipal civil law including land use planning, real property, licensing and/or litigation.
The position requires a JD or LL.B. degree and six years full time paid employment in the practice of law. Candidates must be members in good standing with the Utah State Bar. Performs entry to advanced level professional duties as required to carry out the efficient and effective litigation of civil or criminal cases and the ongoing legal processes of city government. Represents Layton City in assigned legal matters as a plaintiff or defendant.
Chief Prosecuting Attorney will provide supervision to the Legal Secretary II.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university;
AND
Prosecuting Attorney:
One (1) year of experience as an intern or full time attorney;
Chief Prosecuting Attorney:
Five (5) years of experience as a full time attorney
Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and ordinances; legal administrative procedures including the rules of civil and criminal procedure and evidence; the principles, methods, materials and practices used in legal research; Utah Code, constitutional provisions and local ordinances as they apply to city government and its operation; case law related to a variety of city government subjects; criminal law issues.
Ability to analyze and draft legal documents and to propose legislation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city and court officials, employees and the public; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Must possess a license to practice law in the State of Utah.

Litigation Attorney
Busy, small and congenial Salt Lake City law firm with cutting-edge national e-commerce business clients seeks an exceptionally talented, highly competent, organized, and polished attorney to handle wide variety of general litigation and other legal matters. Must be able to: function independently or in a team; interface with external client departments, senior executives, attorneys and support staff; and perform under pressure and stay cool, calm and collected. Attitude and demeanor are key. This position requires an attorney who has legal and administrative skills and is mature minded, and able to have heavy client and executive contact. Works under general supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Therefore, intellectual ability is important and independent judgment a must in order to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload. Provide daily legal support to senior partner, client business departments and executives as well as work on special projects.
Experience and Education. Prefer 3-7 years of substantive litigation experience in a substantial sized law firm or law department reflecting a record of accomplishment and proven leadership ability. Stable work history, dates of employment must be verifiable, at least three checkable references. J.D. with excellent law school credentials, Utah Bar membership or willing to obtain it; judicial clerkship and/or law review/journal experience preferred. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Overview of Representative Tasks. Flexible and solutions-oriented with the ability to work under pressure, prioritize workload and multi-task. Must be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal, communication, writing and creative troubleshooting/problem solving skills as applied to problems with multiple variables. Looking for someone who possesses intellectual curiosity, is good with both big-picture and detailed thinking and understands basic business relationships and confidentiality principles. Indeed, confidentiality must be held in the highest regard.
Must be a hard working self-starter with excellent legal research and drafting ability, a good feel for business operations and objectives and have the ability to communicate with clients with a minimum of legalese. The attorney should have the ability to comfortably interact at all levels of the client companies on complex issues and the ability to communicate complicated concepts both through written and verbal means to the highest levels of management toward offering strategic and tactical solutions that address both the business and legal needs of the client in a varied and fast-paced environment. Must be able to foster relationships to influence solid decision-making at all levels of the organization while driving results and outcomes consistent with business objectives.
