Statement of Candidacy
Rod Snow of Clyde Snow & Sessions would bring over five years of service on the Utah State Bar Commission and thirty-five years of practice to this position. He has practiced in a number of jurisdictions, including the state and federal district and appellate courts in Utah. His expertise extends from white collar crime to environmental matters and includes mediation and arbitration. He has represented clients before federal and state administrative agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Homeland Security (ICE), and the divisions of the State Department of Commerce. He has maintained affiliation with many professional associations. Some of these include the Federal Bar Association (past president), the Utah Crime Victims Reparation Board (appointed by governor), and the American Inns of Court I (past president).
Mr. Snow has shown commitment to continued ethical and effective practice. Since 1983, he has maintained an AV Rating by Martindale-Hubbell. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and is an American Bar Foundation Fellow. He received the Distinguished Lawyer of the Year award from the Utah State Bar in 2003. This year, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Utah Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Determination and commitment to the profession are also reflected in his personal life as he survived throat cancer that impaired his voice but not his ability to practice law.
Mr. Snow encourages participation in bar activities and service projects. He has advocated a strong Young Lawyers Division with services like Wills for Heroes, legal clinics for the public, and fundraisers for abused women and children. Mr. Snow was asked by the Bar Commission to develop a mentoring program. To accomplish this, he co-authored the New Lawyer Training Manual (adopted in 2008), making Utah one of the first states to adopt mandatory mentoring for new lawyers. Many other states are moving forward with mentoring programs. Mr. Snow has great respect for the Bar leaders who have served in the past and their many accomplishments. He also recognizes the passing of the torch to Utah’s young lawyers, viewing the service they render as essential to the Bar and valuable to the community. Going forward, he hopes to give back to the profession by remaining involved in lawyer training and supporting what he calls the “crown jewels” of the bar: the Young Lawyers Division, Minority Bar, and Women Lawyers of Utah.
With your vote and support, Mr. Snow hopes to generate a renewed effort to
1) increase the level of transparency and accountability by keeping Bar expenses consistent with income,
2) support the supreme court’s initiative on professionalism, civility, and improving the public image of lawyers,
3) improve the Bar’s CLE offerings,
4) collaborate with law schools on low and pro bono projects to widen the scope of legal services for the poor and underprivileged, and
5) continue supporting dispute resolution education and projects.
