KIRK
BLOODSWORTH'S case was the
first capital conviction to be overturned in the United
States as a result of DNA testing. A former Marine with
no criminal record, Bloodsworth was wrongfully convicted
and sentenced to death in Maryland in 1984 for a rape and
murder he did not commit. He spent nearly 9 years in prison
before DNA testing proved his innocence in 1993. It took
another 10 years before the Maryland State's Attorney announced
that a DNA match had identified the actual perpetrator of
the crime. That person pled guilty to the murder for which
Bloodsworth had been wrongfully convicted.
Today, Bloodsworth is the Program Officer for
The Justice Project, a nonpartisan organization based in
Washington, D.C. that address unfairness and inaccuracy in
the American criminal justice system. The Justice Project
develops and coordinates national and state-based campaigns
involving public education, litigation and legislation to
reform the criminal justice system, with a particular focus
on capital punishment. Bloodsworth and The Justice Project
led a five-year campaign to pass the Innocence Protection
Act in the U.S. Congress. The Bill, which established the
"Kirk Bloodsworth Post-Conviction DNA Testing Program" was
signed into law in October 2004.
The dramatic story of Bloodsworth's 20-year
journey is chronicled in a book by Tim Junkin, Bloodsworth:
The True Story of the First Death Row Inmate Exonerated
by DNA.

Great Scott! presents... Magic & Comedy
Great Scott, aka Scott Awerkamp, is not only a magician and a comedian, he is
also a wonderful entertainer! He has performed for thousands of people at conventions,
dinner parties, and other corporate events. He combines magic, mind reading,
audience participation, and lots of comedy to create a performance that the
audience remembers long after Scott disappears. Not only will you laugh, but
you will be scratching your head wondering how in the world he did it! Scott
has been performing magic since he was 8 years old. He is a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians. Scott is also
a shareholder with the law firm of Snow Christensen & Martineau and works
out of their St. George office. He has the singular distinction of being the
only attorney in Utah who has deceived every District Court Judge in the State
- he recently performed for their annual retreat! |

The
Mind of the Mediation Advocate
Ballroom E/C
Keynote: Jeffrey Krivis |
|
JEFFREY KRIVIS began his mediation practice
in 1989, when lawyer-mediators in Southern California were
rare, and litigators had to look outside the state for experienced
practitioners. Now, more than 17 years later and having resolved
thousands of disputes - including mass tort, employment,
entertainment, business, complex insurance, catastrophic
injury and class action matters - Krivis is recognized not
only as a pioneer in the field, but also as one of the most
respected neutrals in the state.
An adjunct professor at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution
at Pepperdine University School of Law sine 1994, Krivis teaches
negotiation and mediation skills to lawyers and judges. His
experiences as both a working mediator and academic prompted
him to write two books: "Improvisational Negotiation:
A Mediator's Stories of Conflict About Love, Money and Anger
- and the Strategies that Resolved Them"
and "How To Make Money As A Mediator And Create Value
For Everyone" (Wiley/Jossey-Bass 2006). "Improvisational
Negotiation"
received the 2006 Outstanding Book Award from the CPR Institute
for Conflict Prevention & Resolution.
Krivis is a past president of both the International Academy
of Mediators and the Southern California Mediation Association.
The Los Angeles Daily Journal legal newspaper named
him one of the "top 20 neutrals in the state," and
he continues to appear since its inception on the "Super
Lawyer" list published by Los Angeles magazine and
Law & Politics Media. He is featured in the recent edition
of "Best Lawyers in America." The Hollywood Reporter recognized
him as one of the "Power Mediators" in the entertainment
industry. Krivis received the highest rating (AV) from Martindale-Hubbell.
Jeffrey Krivis has now expanded his practice to the Carmel/Monterey
area for clients who wish to mediate and spend their weekend
in a scenic and relaxing environment.
