Judge Kate A. Toomey, 3rd District Court

Judge Kate A. Toomey was appointed to the Third District Court in January 2007 by Gov. Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. She serves Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties. At the time of her appointment, she was Deputy Counsel of the Utah State Bar’s Office of Professional Conduct. Judge Toomey received a law degree from the University of Maryland in 1991, then served as a judicial law clerk for one year with the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, following which she joined the Maryland Public Defender’s Office. In 1993, Judge Toomey moved to Utah and was an associate with the law firm Anderson & Karrenberg until 1996, when she joined the Office of Professional Conduct. Judge Toomey was the managing editor of the University of Maryland Law Review, the managing editor, then editor-in-chief of Voir Dire, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Utah Bar Journal, as well as a frequent contributor to the magazine. Judge Toomey serves as a member of the Utah Supreme Court Appellate Rules Advisory Committee and is a board member of the Utah Foster Care Foundation. She served for several years as an executive committee member and then president of the Appellate Section of the Utah State Bar, and was a board member, then president, of Voices for Utah Children, as well as the Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance. Judge Toomey is a member of the David K. Watkiss-Sutherland II Inns of Court. 1/07
