Breakfast Fundraiser for the Philippines

Breakfast Fundraiser for the Phillipines - Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. The Filipino Community of Eagle Mountain are holding a breakfast fundraiser to raise funds for the typhoon victims of the Phillipines. Please see flyer for more details.

The sponsors of the fundraiser are seeking cash or breakfast food donations for the fundraiser so if you are able to give, please do so. If you plan to give by attending, please join them on Saturday. Please contact Belle Wade at belle.wade@chrisjen.com or at 801-323-5000.

NAPABA Convention

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA Convention) will be held this year in Boston, Massachusetts from November 18 - 22, 2009.

I encourage you to apply to our stipend program, which provides registration waivers and travel/hotel stipends. To apply, you need to fill out a form and submit it by AUGUST 15. The form is available at http://www.napaba.org/uploads/napaba/2009%20Stipend%20Request.pdf.

UMBA Banquet

The Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet is October 23, 2009, less than 3 months away. Letters requesting donations; scholarship and table sponsorships; and RSVP forms will be coming out within the next few weeks. The UMBA Board is seeking volunteers to assist with pre-banquet preparation that needs to be done now, as well as with the banquet and silent auction. Please consider helping us be able to continue this long-standing tradition. We could not undertake this event without your assistance. Whether you can spare time now or closer to the banquet, we can find tasks that work with your schedule. Save The Date - UMBA Banquet - October 23, 2009

SAVE THE DATE! The UMBA Annual Awards and Scholarship Banquet will be held on October 23, 2009. Location to be determined. Mark your calendars now and plan on attending!

We are looking for volunteers - please contact Su Chon or Grace Acosta if you would like to participate. There are many different ways you can contribute, some of which will only entail a minimum time committment. The areas we need assistance will be:

  • Scholarship Sponsors - soliciting funds from past and new supporters

  • Law School Matches - working with the BYU and the U of U officials to get their match so that our $$ goes further

  • Table Donors - soliciting past and new supporters

  • Non-table donations - soliciting past and new supporters

  • Committee Members: Volunteers Needed

  • Assignments of UMBA members, BYU MLSA, and UofU MLC Reps.

  • Venue and Catering - menu and caterer selection, negotiating prices, etc.

  • Entertainment and Auction - finding entertainment sources; working with the students to contact potential donors from our database of past donations; finding new sources for donations.

  • Graphics and Announcements

    Law Day Events

    The Law Day Luncheon will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 12:00 noon at the Little America Hotel. For more information, please go to the Bar's website. http://www.utahbar.org/lawday/related_events.html. The awards for the UMBA essay contest will also be given out at that time.

    On May 2, 2009, the annual Law Day Run will be held. The Law Day Run raises money for And Justice For All which benefits our non-profit legal services providers. For more information go to: http://www.utahbar.org/lawday/Welcome.html.

    Save The Date: June 13, 2009

    SAVE THE DATE for the Juneteenth and Loving Day picnic. This year, MLC has the central pavilion in Sugar House Park from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 13. Juneteenth celebrates passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, ending slavery. Loving Day celebrates the Loving v. Virginia decision, which ended state bans on interracial marriage. Last year’s inaugural picnic was a great fun and about 150 people attended (managing to find their way to a remote section of Mill Creek Canyon).

    Minority Law Caucus Events

    April 2, 2009:
    The Minority Law Caucus (MLC) is hosting a social from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 2 at Five Star Restaurant, which is located at 268 S. State St. in downtown Salt Lake City. For those so inclined, the “Bar Review” will follow, which is weekly social event hosted by the Student Bar Association at a nearby bar to be determined. We invite attorneys and judges to attend.

    April 15, 2009:
    The Minority Law Caucus (MLC) auction is coming up at noon on April 15 at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law. Therefore, MLC is both soliciting donation or contributions AND inviting folks to attend the auction. This year is the 23rd Annual MLC Auction. The money raised is given away as scholarships to qualified law students. Last year’s auction raised $3,000.

    A Legacy of Liberty
    Celebrating Lincoln's Bicentennial

    To Enter: Write a 3-5 page essay (typed, double-spaced) related to the
    Law Day 2009 Theme. You can write, for example, about how you or
    other youth have been empowered to make a difference in society, how
    youth can learn to understand their rights and responsibilities under the
    law, how youth can become effective participants in civic life, how
    society can help to empower youth, or another topic of your choosing.

    Deadline: Entries must be received by 5 p.m. on April 1, 2009.

    Include the following information: name, address, phone
    number, email address, school name, age, and grade. If you do
    not have access to email or have questions, please call Chrystal
    Mancuso-Smith at 521-6677.

    Winner(s) will be notified by April 15, 2009 and will be invited to attend
    the Law Day Luncheon on Friday, May 1, 2009 at noon at Little America
    Hotel for presentation of the award.

    16th Annual Cesar Chavez Banquet

    Each year the Utah Coalition of La Raza has taken the time to honor the memory of Cesar Chavez, as well as to recognize the contributions of dedicated individuals throughout the state. The 16th Annual Cesar Chavez Banquet will take place on March 27th, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Radisson Hotel. Tickets are $40.     Asian Chamber Gala

    The Asian Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Gala on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 6pm to 10pm at the Little America Hotel. UMBA has graciously agreed to subsidize half the price of a ticket ($65) for interested UMBA members (for a total of 10 tickets). Anyone interested in attending must RSVP to Tammy Georgelas (tgeorgelas@scmlaw.com) and send their checks for payment of those tickets no later than March 10, 2009.     Utah State Bar Spring Convention

    The Utah Bar's Mid-Year Convention held in St George, Utah is March 12 - March 14, 2009. The Mid-Year Convention is a nice getaway for sun, golf and CLE. For more information go to: http://www.utahbar.org/cle/springconvention/Welcome.html
