UMBA BANQUET SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE:
UMBA has announced that its scholarship applications for the University of Utah and Brigham Young University law school students are available. Don't wait until the last minute to apply. The applications are available on the UMBA website or you can contact Grace Acosta (gacosta@dunndunn.com) for more information.
Please note that if receive additional monies for scholarships, there is a possibility that more scholarships will be awarded. So if you're interested in applying, please apply right away.

UMBA Seeks Nominations for Annual Awards:
Do you know someone who should be recognized for their outstanding legal skills? Is there a community member who gives back to the community and deserves recognition? If so, you still have time to nominate someone for the UMBA Annual Awards.
UMBA is seeking nominations for its annual awards to be given at the Annual Awards and Scholarship Banquet to be held on October 23, 2009. Please nominate yourself or someone you know in the following categories:
1. UMBA Honoree of the Year Award: This award goes to a lawyer or other individual who has made a special accomplishment toward the purposes of UMBA. (see Bylaws on UMBA's website at www.umbalaw.org to see the Purposes of UMBA).
2. UMBA Distinguished Lawyer of the Year Award: This award goes to a member of the Utah State Bar who has demonstrated achievement or dedication to objectives consistent with the purposes of UMBA. (see Bylaws on UMBA's website at www.umbalaw.org to see the Purposes of UMBA).
3. Pete Suazo Community Service Award: This award is named after the late Senator Pete Suazo, who dedicated his life to service to minority communities. The award goes to a non-lawyer member of the community who serves minority communities.
4. Jimi Mitsunaga Excellence in Criminal Law or Pro Bono Award: This award is named in honor of Jimi Mitsunaga, one of the First 50 minority attorneys in Utah, who contributed much to the legal profession in Utah and who worked tirelessly to promote the provision of legal services to underserved communities, including minority communities. The award goes to a member of the Utah State Bar who has excelled in the practice of criminal law or has made a substantial achievement in the area of pro bono legal services.
To nominate someone: Please send name and contact information for nominee, with brief description of why the nominee is deserving of the award to Cheryl Mori at moric@sec.gov.
NATIVE AMERICAN SUMMIT SEPTEMBER 2009:
The second annual Native American Summit will be held September 1-3, 2009 at Thanksgiving Point. A copy of the brochure will be posted at www.umbalaw.org. The brochure did not list a primary contact so you may want to contact the Division of Indian Affairs at the Utah Department of Community & Culture.
