TEMPORARY ERROR IN THE UMBA EMAIL LISTSERV:
Folks: We needed the Webmaster to fix the email listserv to ensure that the current leadership was able to send out emails to our members. The system accidentally sent out unsubscribe notices to many members. The Webmaster has reported that all members paid through the 2009-2010 licensing year have been re-subscribed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Please let me Su Chon (sjchon@gmail.com) know if you do not receive UMBA 411s. Thank you.

MESSAGE FROM UMBA PRESIDENT, CHRYSTAL MANCUSO-SMITH:
This message was previously sent out by UMBA president, Chrystal Mancuso-Smith and is included in the UMBA 411.

Good Afternoon,

In an effort to keep UMBA members informed of the items we are working on, I have adopted a new policy. After each monthly meeting we will send to you by email a copy of the meeting minutes. Attached please find a copy of the UMBA meeting minutes from the August 12, 2009 meeting.

As you can see, work on the upcoming Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet, set for October 23, 2009, at the downtown Radisson Hotel, is well underway. Invitations and requests for donations will be coming out starting today. We hope to see you at this traditional event. We are still working on finalizing our speaker arrangements and will keep you posted on the identity of our speaker once they are confirmed.

While UMBA continues to be a thriving organization, we are in need of your input, ideas and assistance. We would like to inform you of the following opportunities available to those of you who would like to become more active. If any of these areas is of interest to you, please send me an email - cmancuso@dunndunn.com or give me a call - 801-521-6677. We would be happy for your assistance in any way that you are able to participate. Or, if you have ideas of areas where UMBA should focus some of its attention, we welcome your suggestion.

  1. 411 committee. To continue offering this tremendous resource, we are looking for a group of individuals to take this task on.

  2. Banquet Committees - various opportunities, i.e. Entertainment; Auction; etc., see Minutes.

  3. UMBA Scholarship Review Committee

  4. UMBA Community Awards Committee - chaired by Cheryl Mori

  5. CLE Committee - To offer an annual Ethics CLE seminar. We are also sponsoring a CLE on "What every non-immigration lawyer needs to know about changes in immigration law" during the Fall Forum, Nov. 12 - 13, 2009.

  6. 501(c) Application - We are preparing an application for non-profit status for the Utah Minority Bar Foundation. While this application has been in the works for a while, we anticipate filing it in short order. If you have experience submitting these applications and would like to assist, please let us know.

  7. New Lawyer Mentoring Program - the Bar is still in need of volunteer mentors for incoming attorneys. From my own experience, I cannot stress how valuable I found the UMBA members who have been, and continue to be, my mentors. Please considered "adopting" a new lawyer.

I appreciate your time and hope to see you at the banquet,

Chrystal
