What: A Community Support Rally for Youth Unjustly Tried as Adults in Utah
When: Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Rally from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Press confrence at 10:30 a..m.
Where: Scott M. Matheson Courthouse, 450 S. State St.
Why: We are bringing awareness of the reprecautions of the Utah juvenile certification process to try children as adults. We are also concerned of the affects on young offenders who are pushed through the adult justice system and housed with seasoned criminals before they are legally adults.
For example, Ricky Angilau, a 16-year-old high school student, is being charged as an adult with first-degree felony murder in the slaying of fellow classmate. Estaban Saidi was a bystander to a larger dispute that spurred the January shooting in a neighborhood near Kearns High School. Ricky fired in the air and then at a group of people, striking Estaban, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Before the incident, Ricky had never been in trouble with the law. He was a good student, a member of the Kearns' rugby team and involved in his LDS church.
