Members Spotlight: Angelina Tsu

Angelina Tsu received her J.D. from the University of Utah in 2002 where she was a member of Law Review and a William H. Leary Scholar.  After graduating from law school, Angelina lived in Hong Kong where she taught in English as a second language and worked as a translator and public relations consultant for Korea Telecom.  Upon returning from Hong Kong, Angelina clerked for Judge Dee Benson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah from 2003 to 2004.  In 2004, Angelina joined the law firm of Ray Quinney & Nebeker P.C. as an associate in the firm's Bankruptcy Litigation and Commercial Litigation sections.

When asked about her firm, Angelina responded, "I am proud to be a part of a firm with such a strong tradition of excellence and a progressive attitude toward women in the law.  To my knowledge, Ray Quinney is the only major law firm in the state with women on the executive committee.  It also has a flexible work schedule option.  My firm has been so supportive of me and my efforts to become a better lawyer.  I feel very fortunate to practice at a firm with so many fabulous role models, both male and female.  The attorneys at Ray Quinney are proof positive that you can live a balanced life and be an amazing attorney and person.  It has been a fabulous place to 'grow up' as a lawyer."

Angelina, originally from Elko, Nevada, is happy with her choice to remain in Utah.  "My decision to stay in Utah was unexpected.  I had always planned to return to Nevada after law school.  I interviewed in Nevada, accepted an offer with a Las Vegas firm, and looked at houses in the area.  I had every intention to return home.  During my third year of law school, I received a call from Judge Benson extending me an offer to clerk in his chambers.  It was, at the time (and likely still is), the clerkship of choice among Utah grads and I was happy to accept.  At the end of my clerkship, Judge Benson advised me to stay in Utah and to work at Ray Quinney—which I did.  I have never regretted the decision.  I have been pleasantly surprised with my time in Utah.  I have found the members of the Utah bar to be warm and receptive.  I know that there is a lot of room for positive change in the community with respect to both women and minorities in the law, but I am confident that we have the tools needed to succeed in making those changes.  I feel fortunate to be a part of the process."

Angelina serves as a board member on the Young Lawyers Division Executive Counsel, the Young Benefactors Executive Counsel, the Young Advocates Counsel and the JRCLS Board (Salt Lake City Chapter).  She is a member of the Utah Minority Bar Association, Women Lawyers of Utah, and the Federal Bar Association.

In her free time, Angelina enjoys many different activities, including golf (she has a mean drive!), rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, yoga, biking, fly fishing, hiking, cooking, opera and travel.
