Commission Highlights

During its regularly scheduled meeting of July 12, 2000, which was held in San Diego, California, the Board of Bar Commissioners received the following reports and took the actions indicated.

1.The Convention schedule was reviewed along with hosting for visiting Presidents.

2.There was a review of current litigation and May financials.

3.The July Bar Applicants were approved.

4.A report on the Legislative hearing was given.

5.Commission appointments were made by David Nuffer.

6.The Commission was reorganized, with David Nuffer being installed as 2000-01 President and Scott Daniels as President-Elect. Nanci Snow Bockelie from Third Division and V. Lowry Snow from Fifth Division were installed as new Commissioners and Rand S. Kester from Fourth Division was installed to a second term.

7.Recognition was given to retiring Commissioners and President.

During its regularly scheduled meeting of July 28, 2000, which was held in Salt Lake City, the Board of Bar Commissioners received the following reports and took the actions indicated.

1.The Commission presented Jennifer Yim with a plaque and thanked her for her dedicated work on the Utah Task Force on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Legal System.

2.Paul T. Moxely gave a report on the ABA Convention.

3.After a discussion of the current by-law provision and the proposed amendment and historical context of ex-officio roles, the Commission opposed the Task Force recommendation to reduce ex-officio membership and general attendance at the Commission meetings.

4.The Commission voted to refer Ethics Opinion # 00-05 back to the Ethics Advisoy Opinion Committee and consult with the Commission’s newly comprised Ethics Advisory Opinion Review Subcommittee to address the Commission’s questions.

5.Gary Sackett reviewed proposed amendments to the Ethics Advisory Opinion Committee Rules of Procedure.

6.Discussion was held on by-law amendment on vacancies and removal of officers.

7.David Nuffer gave a presentation on “Involvement of Volunteers.”
