2,000 Attorneys in 2000
The"And Justice For All” Campaign is very pleased to announce that we have successfully reached our goal of "2,000 attorney donors in 2000," meeting the George S. and
Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation's challenge. The Eccles Foundation pledged a generous grant of $100,000 to the Campaign when we reached this milestone."And Justice For All is grateful
to all the attorney and law firm donors who made this remarkable achievement possible.
When we began the Campaign in 1998, fewer than five percent of the state's attorneys provided financial support to the agencies supported by"And Justice For All - Disability Law
Center, Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake and Utah Legal Services. In only two years, that percentage has increased to 36 percent. This year we increased the number of donors over last year
by 66 percent.
The "And JusticeFor All" Campaign is a collaborative effort of Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake, the Disability Law Center, and Utah Legal Services, the major providers of free
civil legal services to the under-privileged, indigent, and persons with disabilities in Utah."And Justice For All” strives to increase and improve access to justice for the poor and
people with disabilities by securing a stable, legal profession-based source of funding for civil legal services to these traditionally under-represented populations. The Campaign is
dedicated exclusively to raising funds for these agencies to enable them to better serve these citizens.
Campaign Chair Alan Sullivan stated, "More than any other group, the lawyers in Utah appreciate the importance of legal services to the poor and disabled. The willingness of our legal
community to provide such extraordinary support to these agencies is an achievement of which we can all be proud."
Not only did we see a significant increase in total number of donors, the diversity of those contributing has also seen a remarkable transformation. Greater numbers of firms, both large
and small, supported the Campaign."And Justice For All” received 56 gifts from large firms, including 26 of the largest 30 firms in the state; and 29 firms from Logan, Provo, Ogden,
St. George, Cedar City and other towns outside of Salt Lake City have participated."And Justice For All raised over $31,000 from solo and small firm practitioners, including 27 gifts
on behalf of the members of firms with five or fewer attorneys, triggering a matching grant of $25,000 from the Dr. W.C. Swanson Family Foundation in Ogden. This represents a 22% increase
over the 1999 Campaign in solo/small firm participation. This year we also saw a greater diversity in the types of attorneys donating to the Campaign: 277 attorneys from the public
sector, including 16 members of the judiciary, pledged over $24,000; 220 solo and small firm practitioners made over $32,000 in donations; and 48 corporate counsel gave over $8,500.
In another exciting development, this year the Campaign attracted nearly 300 non-attorney donors, many through the successful Law Day Run. While the"And Justice For All Campaign has
been focused on attorneys, we have found that all sectors of the legal community - particularly paralegals and administrative staff - are equally dedicated to the provision of civil legal
services for the poor and people with disabilities. To date, these members of the broader legal community have made gifts totaling $7,620. Many of these donors, like Becci Booth, a
paralegal with Cohne, Rappaport & Segal, approached a member of their firm asking how to participate. "I give what I can," said Ms. Booth, who contributed to the Campaign in
1999 and 2000. The mission of “And Justice For All” - to facilitate access to the legal system for all citizens- is one Ms. Booth has special appreciation for after her own family's
personal experience with the legal system when her husband was denied disability benefits. She shared her motivation for supporting the Campaign stating, "I know how desperately
people need legal assistance sometimes. I like to contribute because someone else may be in my position one day."
The Legal Assistant Division of the Utah State Bar has made a $1,000 donation to the Campaign, representing the 141 professionals of the association. Division Chair, Shelly Sisam, CLA,
said, "The members and officers of the Legal Assistant Division wanted to give something back to the legal profession and the community it serves. The Board discussed several options
and decided that the Ôand Justice for all' program was perfect for this purpose. We are pleased to be part of this promising new project." The Campaign is honored to receive such
tremendous support from Utah's Legal Assistants.
The"And Justice For All” Campaign was proud to be the beneficiary of the proceeds from the 18th Annual Bob Miller Memorial Law Day Run on April 29, 2000. Two-hundred-sixty-five
people (including "couch potato" participants in the Chaise Lounge Division) participated in the Law Day Run, raising $9,000 for "And Justice For All." The top sponsor
of the Law Day Run was the law firm of Richards, Brandt, Miller & Nelson. The Campaign would like to extend special thanks to Richards, Brandt, Miller & Nelson, and to the firm of
Kirton & McConkie for their support. Kirton & McConkie has demonstrated its commitment to the Campaign through a firm pledge, additional individual donations from 6 firm members,
and through the tireless efforts of firm members Michael Conger and David Westerby of the Bar's Law-Related Education and Law Day Committee, who both were instrumental in the planning of
the 2000 Law Day Run.
Other Spring events that supported"And Justice For All” included two CLE Fundraisers. The "And Government Law for All" CLE on May 19, 2000, raised $4,000 for the Campaign.
This government law CLE fundraiser would not have been possible without the sponsorship of Parsons, Davies, Kinghorn & Peters, the Statewide Association of Prosecutors, Utah
Prosecution Council, Utah State Bar Government Law Section and the Utah State Bar Law & Justice Center. The Southern Utah Bar Association co-sponsored a luncheon CLE fundraiser on
June 27, 2000 in St. George. This ethics, disability and family law CLE helped raise awareness of the Campaign and generated 18 new supporters in the Southern region of the state.
"And Justice For All" is honored to be the beneficiary of all royalties from the sales of Campaign Chair Alan Sullivan's new book, A Lawyer's Guide to Utah's New Civil Discovery
Rules. David Sonnenreich and Insight Publishing will also make a contribution to the Campaign for each book sold. Already, this endeavor has raised over $3,000 for "And Justice For
All." To order this book, contact Insight Publishing, Inc., 1113 Boston Building, #9 Exchange Place, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111, (801) 359-4545.
The support from all our donors is greatly appreciated and has enabled the 2000 Campaign to raise nearly $500,000. Funds raised have already helped to increase access to justice by making
possible significant improvements for Utah's legal services agencies, such as facilitating free legal clinics and the establishment of satellite offices for outreach programs in some of
the most remote, impoverished, and previously under-served areas of the state.
"AND JUSTICE FOR ALL" EXTENDS SINCERE GRATITUDE TO ALL THE CONTRIBUTORS TO CAMPAIGN 2000. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE VISION OF EQUAL ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR ALL UTAHNS.
An attorney's contribution to"And Justice For All” will meet all or a portion of his or her obligation under Rule 6.1 of the Utah Rules of Professional Conduct. The suggested
contribution is the dollar equivalent of two billable hours. Donations are tax-deductible. Checks should be made payable to "and Justice for all," and remitted to 225 South, 200
East, Suite 200, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84111.
