Let me introduce you to the Young Lawyers Division (“YLD” or “Baby Bar”) of the Utah State Bar. You are automatically a member of the YLD if you are in your first three years
of practice or until you are 36 (whichever is longer). I invite you to become active in the YLD and the Bar in general.
The YLD is the largest and one of the most active divisions of the Utah State Bar. We provide continuing legal education, opportunities for social and professional
interaction, and charitable community service. Being active in the YLD is a fun way to get involved in the Bar and to develop as a member of our profession.
Join A YLD Committee
The YLD has various committees that serve the needs of new lawyers and the community as well. Below is a listing of the committees and their respective chairs and
vice-chairs. Please feel free to contact these individuals to join their committees which will provide you an excellent way to learn, to network, and to socialize with new lawyers and
other members of the Bar.
Help Out at Tuesday Night Bar
Perhaps the YLD program with the most impact to the community is Tuesday Night Bar. Members of the public with legal problems come to the Law and Justice Center in Salt Lake
City on Tuesday nights commencing at 5:00 pm. Volunteer attorneys are available for 15-20 consultations. The idea is to give them some general advice and send them in the right direction
(e.g. small claims court, Legal Aid, Legal Service, lawyer referral service, etc.). You will feel a real sense of service as you participate. If you are interested, please contact our
committee chair Victoria Bushnell (435) 649-2525 or vice-chair Sam Webb (801) 532-1922. If you do not live in Salt Lake, talk to us about starting your own area Tuesday Night Bar.
Watch for Upcoming Events
YLD helps provide new lawyer training, free family activities at the Mid-Year and Annual Bar conventions, Bar Journal articles focused on YLD issues, public school
presentations, and meaningful community service opportunities. Watch for these events and participate. To cut costs to the Bar, many of these activities are advertised through e-mail, so
make sure the Bar has a current e-mail for you.
