Voter Information for the 4th Division

Candidate for the 4th Division : Tom Seiler

I have been nominated to be the Bar Commissioner for the Fourth Division(Fourth District Court (geographical area) of the Utah State Bar. I have been in private practice in Utah County my entire career. I have tried cases in every District in Utah and have appeared or tried cases in other states. I have been the President of: the Central Utah Bar Association; the American Inn of Court I; and the Utah Association for Justice.

For twenty five years I served on the Advisory Committee to the Utah Supreme Court on the Rules of Evidence. I have been recognized by Super Lawyers, American Association of Legal Advocates, Utah Business Magazine, Martindale Hubbel, the National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys, the National Trial Lawyers Association, Utah Legal Elite and the Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys. I am currently a member of the Utah Supreme Court Professionalism Counseling Board and the Executive Committee of the Litigation Section of the Bar.

Since the inception of the formal mentoring program by the Utah State Bar, I have been registered as a mentor and have had new lawyers involved in that relationship on many occasions.

The Fourth Division needs a Bar Commissioner who will represent the concerns and needs of our legal community. The Bar’s past President, President-Elect and Utah State Bar Commissioners are from Salt Lake. The other four Divisions still have only one Commissioner each.

I have served on the Utah State Bar Review Committee of the Office of Professional Conduct. Because of our committee’s work, the American Bar Association’s team delivered its study of the Utah State Bar Office of Professional Conduct (OPC) to the Utah Supreme Court. As a result changes have been made to the Rules governing the OPC. More changes need to be made so that the work of the OPC is transparent, with even treatment regardless of where an attorney practices.

Most of the CLE sponsored by the Bar is conducted outside of our division. In the main, lawyers in our division have to travel to attend Bar sponsored CLE. This is something that should change.

More Utah Bar Commission meetings should be in the Courthouses in our Division so we are able to participate in commission meetings and better understand our governing body. If elected, I will be a strong voice in our Division at the Bar Commission. Further, I will be liaison between lawyers in our Division and the Bar so that your wants and needs are brought before the Bar Commission.

Electronic voting will be from April 1, 2018, to April 15, 2018. The ballots will be sent to you by email. I would appreciate your vote.
